Halachic Challenges of Modern Israel: On the Ingathering of Ethiopian Jewry

Shiur by Yaakov Weinstein

The ingathering of the Jewish Exiles to the land of Israel is not without halachic controversy. Most controversial has been the ingathering of Ethiopian Jewry. This class explores the following relevant questions: are the Ethiopian Jews of Jewish origin? Even if they are of Jewish origin are we concerned with possible intermarriage between them and the indigenous Ethiopian population? Are the Ethiopians illegitimate due to their unfamiliarity with the laws of marriage and divorce? We follow the reasoning of the great halachic thinkers of the past generation to answer these questions.
